Week 1 Reflective Essay

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Monday 2/10/2023

As this was our first session together, Dr. Lina had us make a small introduction slide about ourselves that we had to present in front of everyone. We were given a few minutes to prepare a simple slide before we had to present. I had a fun time learning about my classmates as some of them are taking this subject as an elective and it was interesting to see where they were from, their interests and I found that I had certain things in common with them. I felt it was a good first session as we had not mingled around with each other much and it was a good initiative for us to grow closer. As said in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Hopper 2023) which explains one must feel a sense of belonging in a certain environment in order for them to reach self-actualization, this quick introduction had helped me learn more about my classmates. This session reminded me of the ice breaking session we had in orientation week. It was fun and interesting to see all the different views of my classmates while getting to know them. The session was held in a laid-back manner, and I believe it made a difference on how well we knew our new classmates. My take away was that it was a fun session, and I am looking forward to future sessions.

5R Framework

I learned how to create a blog using blogger website. I was taught how to operate the blogger website including how to add gadgets, how to edit the theme of my blog website and other skills that were relevant to the blog. The lecture was a bit fast as we only had an hour of class time and I felt it was a bit rushed. The tutorial was interesting, and I gained knowledge on how to write reflective essay using the 5Rs. The blog tutorial was a good refresher as I had to do a blog of my experiences during my diploma teaching practical. I also got a good refresher for the 5Rs that is vital for writing a reflective essay. The reason on why the lecture on 5Rs in addition to the blog were important as I am confident, I will need to write a reflective essay for this semester in regard to any group report, presentation and such. My takeaway from this lecture is that I had a good refresher session. In addition to gaining new knowledge on how to improve my reflective essay writing skills, I got to gain more knowledge on how to make my blog more pleasing to the eye.

I had made my own research regarding the 5Rs needed for my reflective writing when I got home, and it helped clarify some aspects of the framework. I had a better understanding of how to write the reasoning portion of the reflective writing by reading an online article (Robinson 2022). This relieved me as it was a part that I did not have a full grasp on. It reminded me of my days as a diploma student and I searched for different articles and YouTube videos as sources of clarification. The internet is full of great knowledge that is accessible to any one with an electronic device and wifi. Overall, I am glad I have a better understanding of the 5Rs and will continue to ask for advice on how to better my reflective writing.

During this session, my groupmates had helped me a lot with how to navigate the blogger website. They helped me to add a theme to my blog, explained how to add a gadget to my interface, and how to subscribe to another classmate’s blog. I was quite relieved when my groupmates helped me as there were many new widgets that I was unfamiliar with. It reminded me of when we were in the first session of classes and some of my other classmates were kind enough to explain and tutor me on how the school system works. Their assistance, helped my rapport with them which motivated me to participate more in class (Frisby and Martin 2010). The safe environment that was created within my group during this time, had given me hope of building on that rapport with them in the future.

My take away from the first week of lessons is that it is vital to build student-student rapport and student-teacher rapport as it is part of our needs. Humans are social creatures and we interact with one another. I hope to create a safe space for my future students to get to know each other in hopes to motivate them to participate more in class.

  2. The way you depicted the scene in your story enthralled me. I can discern from your blog that you are deeply engaged in self-introduction session, which reflects your enthusiasm for getting to know your new classmates and building connections. Making friends is really important especially in a new learning environment. It is because it gives us a strong sense of connection, lessens feelings of loneliness, increases our sense of worth in the world, and makes us happier in general (Chopik, 2017).

    1. Thanks, Sharon, for these very insightful comments with references support. yes, Vygotsky ( 1978) also emphasized the significance of having a co-created learning environment where individuals feels being cared and valued.

  3. Dear Aimi, it is a nice recall process while reading your Blog, I think your reflective blog only focused on the first "R'' and little bit about second 'R', please read other peers' blog and do a modification from your reading list. I am happy to have a small talk after our lecture to read your refined version. Thanks

  4. I absolutely loved reading your blog post, it really resonated with me. Dr. Lina's intro session was a great way to start the semester and get to know each other. I agree with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that sense of belonging really sets the stage for all of us to thrive. Looking forward to your future blogs and working together in class!
