Week 4 Reflection Aimi

(Appendix 1)

Prior to the Wednesday class session, Dr Lina introduced and taught us how to navigate Davinci Resolve 18(Appendix 1). After the class, each group had to appoint 2 tech leaders to teach the group how to use Davinci Resolve 18 to create a simple edit during the next session. Dr Lina used scaffolding by showing us the app's interface, explaining how to navigate the app and assigned the tech leaders to watch an introduction video on how to use the app. As I was elected to be one of the tech leaders, I watched the video (Stratvert, 2022) and it helped me to understand how to use Davinci Resolve more in depth.

Come Wednesday, my partner, Junyang and I helped our group members to download, and navigate the app which triggered their ZPD (Kurt, 2020) and in turn, helped ease their learning curve on editing a video using Davinci Resolve(Appendix 2). I noticed in some parts of my explanation, I was nervous and had skipped a few steps because of it. I felt like I didn't get my point across quite as clear as I wanted it to be. This led me to feel a bit incompetent as I'm taking this course to some day become an educator and how can I make sure my students understand what I am teaching if I could not do that with my groupmates. This reminds me of when I was teaching 11 year olds during my practical and after I taught them a new word or parts of speech, I would ask if they understood what I taught them and they would respond with 'yes' however, when I asked them to name or use parts of speech in a sentence, they would go silent😂

(Appendix 2)

Based on the reflection, I realized that because of my nervousness, I couldn't effectively get my point across. I've come to the realization that we are all here to learn and it is okay to make mistakes like stuttering or skipping a few steps as long as I remember to clarify, ask questions and check in with those that I'm sharing my knowledge with and vice versa. My take away from this week's sessions are that I will need to be well educated in the content that I will teach to give the best and precise explanation to my future students. I also need to remind myself that life is a journey that is full of questions and everyone is learning and grows at their own pace, so there is no need for me to compare myself to others and instead, stay focused on my own journey.

(Appendix 3)

Multimodality is increasingly regarded as an essential part of the ELT training, pedagogy and education policy(Kessler, 2022).  The past weeks session has implemented a multimodal classroom with the use of Davinci resolve, presentation slides, videos and other mode of communication that helped us in understanding the verbal instructions that were given by Dr Lina(Appendix 3). I believe this ties to the European Framework for Digital Competence of Educators as Digcomp framework talks about the importance of digital competency in education specifically how educators can use technology in the classroom.

(Appendix 4)

In this modern era where children as young as 6 years old are exposed to technology on a daily basis, I believe the use of technology in the classroom can be beneficial for educators to enhance their teaching method and professional development(Caena & Redecker, 2019). Similarly during my practical, I frequently used a projector to present my slides to my classroom and I found that the students are more engaged with the lesson when I present videos or played games with them through the projected slides(Appendix 4). Although I remember it takes time for me to set up the projector and sometimes, it was difficult for me to get a good wifi signal as my school had poor wifi and was in a newly developed area.

(Digcomp Framework)

I understand that to overcome the issue of the poor Wi-Fi signal, is to bring my own portable Wi-Fi port that only I could connect to, to ensure a smooth lesson without interruptions from poor Wi-Fi signal. In addition, it was beneficial for me to come at least 10 minutes early to each of my class as it gives me time to prepare and start my lessons on time. As per the Digcomp method, digital resources are important for the professional development of educators and it can empower digitally competent students hence I plan to implement this teaching framework in my future classroom to create an engaging classroom and empower students with the use of presentation slides, videos and many more.

  1. Dear Aimi, thanks for the very in-depth reflections. You are thinking of your thinking to make the reflection at a higher level.
I am wondering where are the entries for week 5, 7, thanks.
    Marked.
