Week 10: Using music as teaching and learning strategies.

Music contributes a lot in our daily lives. For me personally, listening to music has been very helpful in helping me to self-regulate. There are all kinds of music for all kinds of moods and not to mention the meaning of songs may be much deeper than what we would expect. This week, we had a special guest lecture from Mr Muhammad Tamim Faruq bin Kharul Azmi, a lecturer, designer, and content creator from Multimedia University. Mr Tamim had shared with us how to utilize music as teaching and learning strategy.

Utilizing music when conducting the lesson can help with the productivity, motivation, and behaviour of the students in the classroom. This is especially true in regard to primary school students. A 3 weeklong study done at Logan Elementary School found that by playing background music in the classroom, it help increase the productivity, motivation, and behaviour of problematic students (White, 2023). According to Mr Tamim, there is a positive impact on concentration when certain types of background music is played. For example, a recommended music background for when students are revising for an important exam, are soft instrumental or ambient sounds as these types of background music helps in blocking outside noises while not being loud enough to disrupt your focus. In addition, classroom performance of kids is greatly impacted by the playing of soft classical background music as the lesson is ongoing (White,2023).

It is evident that music has an impact on students’ motivation, productivity, and overall behaviour while in class. Furthermore, background music has proven to improve students' engagement quality and positively influence their social development. I believe music can be a great teaching tool as it could also help in understanding our students better. I recall my experience utilizing music for a session with my 11-year-old students, I was teaching them about past tense and I had found a Billie Eilish song that had past tense and I printed out the lyrics and blanked out the past tenses so they can do a fill in the blank activity later on, I even brought my speaker so that the students can listen to the song while they answer the worksheet. This session went extremely well and by the end of the lesson, I had become closer to them which helped me to cater to their different learning styles.

I understand the significance of music as a tool for teaching and the most important part of using this strategy is the increase in student engagement in the classroom as well as their heightened motivation. In conclusion, based on the fact that not only is music a powerful asset to be implemented, but it also has the potential to be used in multiple different ways which makes it easy to adapt into a lesson. My takeaway from this week’s sessions is that it was interesting to see how our bodies subconsciously move faster and think better when paired with external support like how a fast-paced background music can trick our brains into completing the task faster.

Solving the puzzle was fun!
